If a turtle has no shell is it naked or homeless?
This is the fortune that came out of my cookie at an all you can eat buffet when I was visiting my home town in Flordia a couple weeks back. I started cracking up. Is that even a fortune? It’s not encouraging, lucky, or scary. What seemed like a random question asked by my dessert sparked a conversation and even a revelation for me.
For the next few days in silent moments I would sit there thinking about this turtle and asking friends and family what they thought the answer was. I think it was a 50/50 split between naked and homeless until someone finally said,
Actually it’s probably just dead.
And what should have been obvious from the beginning hit me. Of course it’s dead. Turtles need their shells to survive. Naked or homeless with the reality of death is not the perfect picture of what I want to say here but I hope you can follow me. I feel many times in life I missed reality while pondering the options. I bet I’m not alone in that. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s in front of you and miss out on what’s really happening. It’s so easy to look at the life you’ve been living and think, this is it. Or these are my only options.
Your life can be more than the options in front of you. Stop asking yourself if the answer is this or that and open your mind to the possibility that God has something even better for you. Maybe the answer to your pondering is not the options you’ve been weighing but something else entirely.
